Facebook can seriously be used as a spying tool. I think that most corporate recruiters (many being in their mid 20’s) are using facebook to see if new hires have anything perverse or innapropriate on their profiles.

Is that Jay Berkowitz (Ten Golden Rules) from Boca Raton, FL?
If so, we worked together some time ago. Great guy and very knowledgable. SEO, Viral Marketing, all that stuff.
Maybe he will write a book, and I can put it in my library next to yours, Shawn!

Thank you so much Missy and Connie for doing this walk. My mom is a 2 year breast cancer survivor so this hits home for me. She battled and won stage 3 (of 4). Because of people like you and with God’s healing, my mom is here today.
Thank you again for your love for others.

Hi Carsten - It was my impression from the question that the person wanted to intentionally get their affiliate links included in the organic results. I’ve had some links that go through .htaccess get indexed high myself and change them out when I discover them. Several months ago, I was contacted by a company where I was an affiliate - my affiliate link (affiliatetip.com/company) that was...
Comment on Cynical Manipulation of AGLOCO Sheep by...
Like AllAdvantage, I think Agloco is also flawed because when (if) they release shares then a huge number of people will want to cash them in, thus crashing the price. The likes of John Chow will do well as he has managed to sign up huge numbers of direct and indirect referrals. However, the guy at the bottom will make next to nothing and then walk away. When the base of the pyramid is removed the...

Great post. I just signed up for a Facebook account. I didn’t know much about it other than the basics. I’m not certain I’ll do much with my account but I did want to see first what all the “hype” was about. I thought the embedded video was fantastic and your closing line made me chuckle.

I am not sure if the question was describing something like what happened to Andy. There are other ways “to add” links to search engines. Keep in mind that Google results, for example, are today more than just 10 organic results of websites surrounded by 2 PPC ads on top and a bunch of more PPC ads to the right. Think about Google Coop for example and Google Base where you have things like...

You hit a nerve with me as to what men deem business as usual; I can hear your acceptance but offense at this type of business practice.

Well, I am just starting out in this industry so I am nowhere near anyone caring for my opinion, but I would just like to point out a few things if you will allow me, even though I am a noob.
1. Yes, sex does sell.
2. If an organization is trying to convince me that it is the “real deal” and they are the only ones on the planet with any integrity and honesty, and then they man their booth with...

Mr. Dahimover, That is a funny story. It is interesting that people display such personal information on such a public forum. Before I interview someone, I check their email address on Google, and their myspace page. Do not want someone who talks about Drinking and being a twink. Just not the kind of employee I want working my affiliate program. We all know its too much work for someone who...

I have to agree with JW, I got into out of the necessity of dating a younger friend. They are totally obsessed with it and now I am the running joke of the office because some of my coworkers take pleasure in publishing peoples profiles. The plus side is, I found it to be a place where I can express my indivduality and pride. I like playing the role of business man during the day, and a flamboyant...
Americans spend $41 billion on pets
This is a great article on consumer spending on pet related items from MSNBC. If you haven’t already focused on this area of retail, now is definitely the time. Some interesting statistics from the article: Annual spending on pets is seen to increase to $52 billion in the next two years. That is more than we spend on Movies - ($10.8 billion) Video Games ($11.6 billion) or Music ($10.6 billion)...

I accidentally managed it on my main affiliate site - I use htaccess files in a hierarchy of ‘outlink’ subdirectories for redirects, so my messy affiliate links are shown as mysite.com/outlink/offers/merchantname03, and suchlike. Some of these, bouncing straight to a merchant’s site, started showing up on Google when I forgot to block the outlink subdirectory in my robots.txt file. Soon as I saw...

Well, I was dating a girl in her mid 20’s not too long ago (I’m mid 30’s) and found out quickly how centered MySpace and Facebook are to the lives of her generation. She thought it was a place for me to hook up. As far as business goes, I’ve...

The workaround for this is to construct a product/service review and contextually embed your aff links. Build a big enough ball of content this way and you’ll build a review site. -
I guess the BH way would be to get a content page indexed, then iframe or swap it for an aff link. But we’re all white hat, aren’t we? And we’d never do something like that…

Submitting Affiliate Links to Search Engines
Is it possible to submit affiliate links to search engines and have those links turn up in the search engine results? I guess anything is possible. But I don’t think the search engines or their users want these sorts of results coming up. In my opinion, it’s not a good practice, as you are not adding value anywhere. Since you wouldn’t actually be serving a role with this strategy, but rather just...

I’m sorry, but I had to mention that this ‘20 year old’ forgets that many people of all ages go to college. Seriously. People from 15-100 can take college courses. One more thing to consider… if she was a fan of Bruce Willis (for example) and he was on Facebook, she would probably want to be his friend. What happens to the age difference feelings then?

Hi Shawn,
Wow, I’m honored that you’d download my friday podcast. For new affiliates, I’d also recommend “Affiliate Marketing Today” on WMR. Even though the show is now off the air, the eps from 2004-2005 with Haiko hosting are instructional, esp if you’re newer to aff/CPA marketing. And obviously, Affiliate Thang’ is something that I religiously download as well. You get a whole bunch of up to...

The Podcasts on My iPod
I used to try to listen to Podcasts on my computer as I worked, but I realized that I wasn’t really paying attention with the phone ringing, e-mail flowing in, and a big inbox in front of me.
So I finally picked up an iPod a few months back, and made it a habit to get out of the office to get fresh air and listen to podcasts.

I think the affiliate community really is coming into its own at Facebook. To me, it seems that we’ve carried over and transformed the buzz from the Summit into something that is really tangible. I’m sure there are some youngsters (I’m 28, so typing that feels weird) who resent the old folks joining, but as a former secondary school and college teacher, I daily get “friended” by former students...
Am I Too Old for Facebook?
I created my account on Facebook about a year ago. I joined because I had a curiosity as a marketer. I’m in there to play around and experience the environment, and to contrast it to the opportunities with MySpace. Lately, I’ve gotten more into testing the applications on Facebook with an eye towards conceiving some of my own, and with the avalanche of colleagues joining, it’s become a good place...
